Off The HookBarber Shop · Est. 1998 Call

Castleberry Hill · Est. 1998

Ten chairs. One room.

Karl Booker opened Off The Hook on Peters Street in 1998 and has been cutting in Castleberry Hill ever since. The block has changed around us. We have not moved.

01 The Room

A barbershop that outlasted the block around it.

Castleberry Hill has changed a great deal since 1998. We have not moved. Nearly three decades in one neighbourhood means the people in these chairs are frequently the children of people who used to sit in them.

02 The Chair

Nobody is in a hurry to leave.

A cut takes the better part of an hour, and the hour is half the reason people come. A barbershop is where the neighbourhood catches up with itself — who is doing what, what is opening, what is closing, who needs something.

The work still has to be right. No shop stays full for twenty-eight years otherwise. But the room is the other half of it, and that part cannot be rushed either.

03 The Proprietor

Karl Booker, master barber.

Karl has been cutting hair in Atlanta since 1989 and opened this shop in 1998. His name is on the apron and he is still behind a chair — nearly three decades of Castleberry Hill has walked past that window, and a good deal of it has sat in front of him.

Ten chairs means ten barbers, and the shop runs men's and women's work side by side rather than sending anyone elsewhere. If you have someone you sit with, ask for them by name when you call.

05 Who Sits

The whole family, in the same room.

A full-service shop. Walk-ins are welcome, and if what you want is not obvious from the list below, the shop is one phone call away.

01

Men

The standing chair. The one you have sat in since somebody else was paying for it. Cuts, line-ups, beard work and a hot-lather straight razor shave.

02

Women

Full-service cuts and styling, in the main room or in the semi-private booth at the back if you would rather have the quiet.

03

Children

First cuts and school-year cuts, in a room that has been doing them since 1998 — and where somebody usually has the game on.

06 The Day

Open early, Tuesday to Saturday.

The shop keeps long hours and opens earlier at the end of the week, when the chairs fill fastest.
